Nootropics & Cognitive Peptides: A Beginner's Map
An overview of the most researched cognitive-enhancing peptides and nootropics — what they do and how they compare.
The Cognitive Enhancement Landscape
Nootropics isn't just "smart pills." The category spans everything from your morning coffee to research peptides that modulate neurotrophic factors. Here's what's actually worth knowing about.
Peptide Nootropics
Semax
- What it is: Synthetic analog of ACTH(4-10)
- Route: Intranasal
- What it's studied for: BDNF expression, cognitive enhancement, neuroprotection
- Notes: Originally developed in Russia. The N-Acetyl version (NA-Semax) is considered more potent. Start conservative.
Selank
- What it is: Synthetic analog of tuftsin
- Route: Intranasal
- What it's studied for: Anxiolytic effects, cognitive function, immune modulation
- Notes: Often paired with Semax. Generally considered to have a calming effect on cognition rather than stimulating.
Dihexa
- What it is: Angiotensin IV analog
- Route: Typically sublingual or intranasal
- What it's studied for: Extremely potent neurotrophic activity — orders of magnitude more than BDNF in some studies
- Notes: Very limited human data. Potent stuff. Not for beginners.
BPC-157 (Cognitive Angle)
- Beyond its healing reputation, some research suggests BPC-157 influences the dopaminergic system and may have neuroprotective properties.
Non-Peptide Nootropics Worth Knowing
- Lion's Mane Mushroom — promotes NGF (nerve growth factor). The most studied natural nootropic.
- Creatine — yes, it works for the brain too. 5g/day.
- Magnesium L-Threonate — the only form shown to cross the BBB effectively
- Omega-3s (DHA) — foundational. If you're not taking this, start here before anything fancy.
Stacking Considerations
The classic beginner nootropic peptide stack:
- Semax (intranasal, AM) for focus and BDNF
- Selank (intranasal, PM) for anxiolysis and calm cognition
- Lion's Mane (oral, daily) for NGF support
Use our Intranasal Calculator to figure out spray dosing.
Safety Notes
- Start ONE compound at a time. You can't troubleshoot a stack.
- Keep a log of subjective effects — memory, focus, mood, sleep
- Cycle peptide nootropics. Don't run them indefinitely without breaks.
- Get bloodwork done periodically. Our Bloodwork section covers what to track.
